YOGYAKARTA – Department of Chemical Engineering Faculty of Engineering UGM (DCEFEUGM) achieve accreditation from the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) in December 2014. This achievement makes UGM as the first university in Indonesia to obtain accreditation IChemE. IChemE is an institution of higher education accredited chemical engineering based in London, England which has become one of the international quality standards in the field of chemical engineering.
To obtain this accreditation, according to the Chairman of the DCEFEUGM Ir. Moh. Fahrurrozi, M.Sc., Ph. D., it had to wait for three years to follow the stages of the process of a thorough evaluation and continuous improvement both in terms of curriculum, resources and safety culture is an aspect in IChemE assessment.
From the aspect of resource, Fahrurrozi said, IChemE assess twenty professor of chemical engineering has been a member of IChemE earlier. DCEFEUGM even considered to have a curriculum that adheres to international standards of outcomes based education (OBE). Nevertheless, the assessment of chemical engineering study program accreditation not only from the aspect of learning outcomes listed in the curriculum, but also the learning outcomes assessed from the competencies achieved by students after completing the learning process. Students are also required to master the technical competence and success skills required to be ready to compete in the world of work.
With this achievement, he said, the DCEFEUGM has been equated with the chemical engineering program at the world renowned schools. In fact, this accreditation will also be more opportunities and networks DCEFEUGM at the global level. So that will directly impact on improving the competitiveness of graduates that will make engineers reliable chemical engineering in the global job market. This international accreditation is the responsibility of the department to ensure graduates have an internationally accepted qualification.
Secretary for Research, Cooperation and Alumni DCEFEUGM Wiratni Budhijanto, Ph.D., said that to qualify for accreditation IChemE, previously carried out an assessment process undertaken by the three assessors IChemE background in chemical engineering professor from Australia as much as two men and a chemical engineer from the UK.
The third assessor directly expressed their admiration of the unique things that is seen as the typical hallmarks the DCEFEUGM, among them: first, the program internships rated very good hone engineering skills at the same time awareness about sustainable development. Second, a comprehensive examination as a test of the maturity of engineering thought before students graduate and third, the idea of students from the DCEFEUGM National Safety Competition held as an annual event that is considered very effective to campaign for a culture of safety among students.
